Sakura House
John Goodbun (chair of fundraising) and Daniella Vukobratic (VON Oxford) were our guest speakers this evening.

Below are some facts from VON Oxford's website.

The dream of Sakura House began like many other programs VON Oxford manages, with the recognition of a need and the realization that we have the capacity, expertise and  infrastructure to create and run this much needed facility.

A 12,000 square foot home, located just east of Woodstock was generously donated in 2005 to VON Oxford by  Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada Inc. In winter 2008 reconstruction began to add space for 10 beautiful, private patient rooms - with opening planned for August 26 2009.  The public opening is planned for August 28, 2009

Why do we need a Hospice?

An overwhelming 90% of Canadians say they would prefer to die at home. The stark reality is, without an adequate alternative, 75% of us will die in an institutional setting, such as a hospital. Sakura House will have the structure for the highest level of comprehensive hospice palliative care in a home-like care setting.  Patients will receive pain and symptom management combined with vital psychological and spiritual support—for themselves and their friends and families who are on the journey with them

Please check out VON Oxford's website for more information.

Here are some facts I took from the meeting.

This is the first residential Hospice done by VON Canada.  It will be a 10 bed residence, with 200 patients a year.  Food will be catered in for the residents and a kitchen is provided for guests.  It will require 120 volunteers to run this facility.  There service is of no charge and is a 24 hour service.  The average stay in a hospice is 21 days.
The annual cost to run the hospice is $800,000, however $100,000 is what Sakura house is expected to raise.

There are two upcoming local events posted on VON Oxford's website.  They are always in need of volunteers, so if you feel called to help please contact them.  This service would not survive without the help of our community.

Thank you John and Daniella for coming out tonight.  It was a very informative evening.  Thank you for your service in Oxford County and beyond.

Please join us next Wednesday June 17th for our meeting at the Quality Inn at 6:30 p.m.
We would love to see some new faces!  Contact us if you're interested!
