Our guest speaker this evening was Laura Hayes, Co-ordinator of the Lifeline Program at Woodstock General Hospital.  Lifeline is a personal respnse service that ensures that a person living at home can get quick response whenever it is needed.  It allows disabled or older adults to live independently and confidently in their own home.  Laura shared with us that the Lifeline program here is unique as it was originally started by the auxilliary to the hospital (volunteers) and the calls continue to go to our local hospital rather than a central monitoring station.  It services all of Oxford County except Tillsonburg.   There are 350 clients in our community.  The system works by the client pushing a button, and then speaking into the communicator unit to the operator.  The operator can then contact the responder people that the client has listed on file (ie. family, neighbour, friend).  The client can also have an "inactivity timer" setting for them to initiate each day (ie. morning and evening).  If this is not done, a call is automatically placed to the operator.
