Rotary Club of Woodstock-Oxford Donates $10,000.00 to Polio Plus.
Rotary Club of Woodstock-Oxford launched their Drive for Polio Eradication Campaign to raise funds for Polio Plus on July 30, 2008. The objective of the project is to promote awareness in the community regarding Rotary's involvement with Polio Eradication and to raise funds for the $100 million dollar Gates Foundation Challenge Grant.
"Rotary club and Rotarian participation in this effort is crucial to making it a success. Each club is being challenged to organize a public fundraising event to raise a minimum of $1,000 annually for the next three years."
The fund raising part of this project involved selling attractively packaged golf balls - each golf ball representing one dose of Polio Vaccine.

New Delhi: India is on its way to become a polio free country soon with all the efforts it has put in. There was a sharp decline in polio cases to date in 2010 with just 39 cases reported as compared to last year's 498 cases.
NEW DELHI: A single oral vaccine that protects against two deadly strains of polio — P1 and P3 — could eradicate the crippling disease from the world in the next three years.

Publishing their findings in the British Medical Journal "The Lancet", Nigel Crawford and Jim Buttery, researchers at Australia's Murdoch Children's Research Institute, said the effectiveness of the new vaccine was already evident in India, which has recorded only 32 cases so far this year as compared to 260 in 2009.
